LYTHAM ST. ANNES, England -- There is little to suggest that Tiger Woods became nostalgic when he arrived on the grounds at Royal Lytham & St. Annes on Sunday for an early-morning practice round. It ... Read full story

I've never seen so much pathetic media coverage over one athlete in my entire life. The media spectrum that covers Tiger has to be the widest of any athlete. But the one thing I will NEVER understand are pieces like this one.. why do the media feel the need to write these over dramatic video pieces as if the guy is literally dead? How about just let things play out and THEN do your dramatic videos and blogs. He is THIRTY-SIX YEARS OLD. The ONLY man the media can compare him to is Jack Nicklaus and the guy was what, 46 when he won his last major? For heaven's sake... give Tiger a break. Let history play out instead of trying to stir the pot with "what if's" while we are in the MIDDLE of Tiger's story. 312 Days ago

Well&umm because he is popular and is probably the greatest to ever play the game. You dont have to wait till they are dead or retired to reminisce about the achievements that helped build a legend. Given a singular person sport this is what you do, the same was done with Sampras when he was playing, also they are writing these about Roger in tennis now as well. Some of us dont want to wait till the story is over to start reading it. 312 Days ago

What happened to the underdog theme? In politics, too much is enough and the wealth should be shared so they say. Doesn't seem to apply to Sports however. Roger Federer 17, Andy Murray 0. Just a tad lopsided no? Go away Tiger, and take Fed with you! Some guys can only dream of a Major, 1 measly Major. Tiger and Roger's want for even more is perverse. 312 Days ago

Harig, Can we officially conclude that you are Tiger's very own paid personal writer/shill? Ya gotta mix it up a little in the future for credibility sakes. Focus on someone, anyone, other than Tiger because this bias is downright obscene! 312 Days ago

I honestly think Tiger's group is the interesting one to watch. Mainly because of Tiger and this non-stop coverage of him over the past couple years, but Sergio always gets a good bit of press at the British Open. Donald, Mickelson, and Ogilvy is a solid pairing, but let's face it, Phil sucks at the British Open, always has. Luke Donald is awesome, but pretty boring. I do hope Ogilvy brings a big mustache with him this week though, that's usually pretty funny to see. 312 Days ago

where have you been? the "non-stop coverage" of tiger didn't begin a couple years ago. it began in the mid 90's, before he even turned pro 312 Days ago

There's one main factor at the British Open that separates it from the rest of the majors: Weather. You ask any of the guys playing, and every year they will tell you it all depends on how the weather is. All the links courses have similar ground conditions (with the exception of Muirfield maybe because of its weird layout) and weather is the key to how these guys play. 312 Days ago

Must we call it "The Open", too?. The thing I don't like about it is so much depends on the luck of the roll, it's hard to have a favorite there based on skills 312 Days ago

i'd say there is skill involved. is it just luck that peter thompson & tom watson have won it 5 times each?? 312 Days ago

Tiger's future majors:
2013 Masters
2014 Open Championship at Hoylake or 2015 Open Championship at St Andrews
2016 Masters
2017 PGA at Quail Hollow
2019 US Open at Pebble Peach
19 Majors at the age of 44 313 Days ago

Sounds reasonable to me, depending on how he plays over the next few years. You never can tell though with that bad knee, it could go limp again at any time. Give it a rest ClemPaws, you know what he means. That's honeslty a pretty good prediction analysis considering the results he's had at those venues. 312 Days ago

putting putting putting...Tiger must drain some putts or he won't win 313 Days ago

did you watch US Open in SF ? I was there. Tiger missed bunch of short putts on first 2 days. Should have had a bigger lead going into Sat. 313 Days ago

Tiger's putting has been a problem at the majors since 2009. 312 Days ago
JMCOS562
His putting is okay. Its not as good as it use to be, but his real problem is he can't get the ball close enough to the cup for realistic birdie chances. 313 Days ago
RafaWoods01
last I checked, he was number 4 inside ten feet. If he sucks, what does that say about the rest? Sure, he's not as money inside 5 feet but really, he has his good weeks and his bad weeks. 312 Days ago

I'm talking about Memorial and Congressional, two of his last 3 events. I don't count Greenbrier because he barely prepared for the course and had never been there before. He didn't miss many short ones at Memorial and Congressional. 313 Days ago

If not the Open, I think the 2013 Masters will be his best shot at a major. He needs to get fifteen soon, though. 313 Days ago

I'm a huge Tiger fan, but I'm not excited about his chances. The course doesn't seem to suit him too well. 313 Days ago
stanfordfan113
The greens are/ were my greatest concern. That, and the fact that he didn't finish too well the times he played here. All three of his wins this year have been events he'd won before. 313 Days ago
Mongoose268
I dunno. He's shown the ability to avoid bunkers and play the wind on similar courses, even if he hasn't won at Lytham as a pro. If he's got his swing working, my main concern would be how he reads the greens (which may vary in speed through the tournament--not his strong suit). If he's good with his irons, he can help himself with some of the putting. I thought this would be his best chance at a major this year. (Of course, I didn't see him winning three tournies up to this point, either.) 313 Days ago

Alright guys. I got to go do grown up stuff now. See ya later Rory, Raph and Bev. 313 Days ago

rory is lame
Tiger isn't even 100%, and yet he's the only 3-time winner on tour this year...
This is why I am confident Tiger gets 19 majors before he turns 46 (when Jack got his 18th) because there is just nobody to compete with him on a consistent basis right now. He has the run at 38 majors without serious competition before he becomes the same age as Jack. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
Agreed, but 9 Masters, 3 US Opens at favorable locations, 4 PGA's at favorable locations and 2(?) Opens at St Andrews are alot of opportunity for Tiger to win 5 majors. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I sort of agree with you. He has to win one by the end of next year. So one in the next 6. Otherwise, he is gonna be in trouble mentally. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I don't define next greatest by tournaments as much as majors. In the "new crop" I don't see anyone who can win 35 to 40 tournaments lifetime and 4 majors. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
If its not Rory, right now it looks like it would have to be Webb Simpson or Rickie Fowler, but neither of them impress me as the type to be dominant and take over the sport after Tiger. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I was gonna maybe say Bill Haas or Nick Watney, but they are both 31 and just haven't done enough for me to expect multiple majors at this point in their careers. Besides, with Tiger being only 5 years older. I would just pick Tiger as the next Tiger instead of them. 313 Days ago

As far as who will be the next Tiger, the most obvious choice is Rory but he's more likely just to be mini-Phil.
This is absolutely true. I see Rory as the next Phil with slightly less wins and maybe 3 majors lifetime. But there is definately room for a more dominant and consistent player to win 4 to 6 majors and pass Phil in wins. I just haven't seen a player like that yet. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I liked mini Phil because I find Rory to be inconsistent just like Phil and when things start going wrong for Phil it is always "fatigue" or "cell phones" and Rory kinda does the same thing. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
Ok. Drop the number to 3, because I can't go 2 majors since Rory should be able to achieve that just by staying healthy and playing for the next 25 years. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
Most overrated golfer in the game today?
Somebody besides Tiger, whether you believe its him or not. Just so we can get different names. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I got Rory. He won one major and was pretty much proclaimed the next Woods. He has struggled this year, yet I constantly hear about him being Top 3 for pretty much any major. Maybe he is not the most overrated with the media anymore, but I think he still is the most overrated with the fans. Just look at the SN Poll on who in the Top 25 is most likely to win The Open. They have Rory in 2nd behind Tiger. 313 Days ago
JMCOS562
I don't think he will even break top 20. He will make the cut, but so will a couple of amateurs. 313 Days ago

Phil 313 Days ago
sequoit
Phil is a solid second for the modern era, and nobody in the world will say he's number one if (and it's still a big if) Tiger can maintain some momentum again. It's numbers, purely and simply. Tiger, Phil, Veejay. Unless Tiger fans don't believe in numbers. 312 Days ago
JMCOS562
I think Phil should probably be up there, especially because of the Phil fans. When you talk to them, Phil is basically one of the three best golfers of all time, but he's always just been too inconsistent to be one of the best. He is a great golfer. The second best of his generation, but not as great as most people proclaim him to be. 313 Days ago
