The Oakland Athletics have turned to a closer-by-committee approach.

A's manager Bob Melvin announced the decision before his team faced the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

The move comes one day after left-hander Brian Fuentes, who had been Oakland's lone closer, allowed three runs in the ninth inning of a 9-8 loss to the Diamondbacks. It was Fuentes' third blown save of the season.

According to the Bayareanewsgroup.com, Melvin said Fuentes and right-handers Grant Balfour and Ryan Cook will get chances to close out games going forward depending on their availability and the matchup.

Balfour was Oakland's closer to start the season but was demoted in mid-May.

"I feel like we have three closers now," Melvin told the Bayareanewsgroup.com. "We'll do the best we can to match up."
